To know that a plant and flower can bring joy and reverence just by existing and being there to gaze upon is a beautiful experience in its own right. However, when that visual gift can also be consumed, bringing its beauty not only to your soul, but to your body as well, I would say that is a gift one should not pass up.
I was never a tea drinker, that is…. until I became one. In fact, the only warm beverage I would consume for quite some time was Hot Chocolate, yes with whip cream. Even better if you dropped a hershey kiss in the bottom of your favorite mug to melt into liquid gold.
But as I grew, older and wiser, and started paying attention to the things around me, my eyes and ears really took notice of the drinks I put in my body. Where water has claimed the #1 spot (drinking 8 glasses a day of course), you might actually be better off drinking green tea.
According to Time Magazine, “Tea is high in oxygen radical absorbance capacity (“ORAC” to its friends), which is a fancy way of saying that it helps destroy free radicals (which can damage DNA) in the body. While our bodies are designed to fight free radicals on their own, they’re not 100 percent effective — and since damage from these radical oxygen ninjas has been linked to cancer, heart disease and neurological degeneration, we’ll take all the help we can get.”
Green Tea however leads the race in health by the most concentrated in antioxidants, not just nourishing your body, but helping fight against disease. It is preventative medicine in a cup. It’s warm liquid healing you from the inside out, gifting you with confidence that for all the other choices you make during the day, this one was good and right and true.
I understand that much like coffee and beer and scotch, tea is an acquired taste. So if you are unable to jump right in to drinking green tea, might I suggest trying a blend, or herbed green tea. Drizzle a little local honey to flavor it or sweeten it up.
While trying to add green tea into my diet, knowing it wasn’t my favorite it, I knew I wanted to do this for me. I started with my favorite mug and I would drink a full cup in the morning before my kids woke up, or I would wait till they were in bed, and it would serve as my warm beverage while I snuggled up with my journal or computer late into the night while I write. This allowed a growing love affair with tea. I slowly came to adore it and desire it. I learned its flavored, I respected what it did for my mind and body, and ever so slowly the sweeteners lessened and the green leaves started to outweigh the floral tea I added to it.
If you are looking to do something just for you. A gift you can give yourself every day. Green tea is a blessing for the moment you drink it leading into all the moments of your future that you will create by including this in your life rhythm.
